What causes a pinhole leak in a copper water line?

A pinhole leak is a small hole which increase start
in piping creating a mist or stream of water to shoot out. In most cases these pipe leaks build because of the pipes being eroded from the inside out. There are many of reasons that explain why a leak arises. A few of the main aspects that cause a leak normally include the age of your home, your municipalities water pressure, the amount of minerals within your water, how the water pipes are put together (i.e. elbows, fittings, pipe bends etc.), what season you are in, and the way the plumbing was hooked up.

Pin-hole water leaks in copper water pipe
Quite often the leakages take place at the water main inside the house. It occurs around the water main because this is the spot that the water pressure is the greatest inside your home. Much like how water over time can cut deep into rock creating erosion. It also can deteriorate within your pater pipes. It slowly erodes in the interior of the pipe until it eventually gushes through.

Copper tubing breakdown
Around the US in many different states and regions, you can find increased water pressure with a lot of minerals in the water. These things coupled with the normal age of your house around 25-40 years of age means that there is a large number of pin-hole leak problems lately. Significant substance content in the water could potentially cause a wide range of water line concerns. Anything from water heaters to faucets and water pipes are affected by the excess minerals. Conditioning your drinking water does not help very much either. Conditioning water doesn’t dispose of most of the minerals which might be contained in the water.

Pin Hole Leaking in Pipe Joints
Almost all of the elements that induce pin hole leaks are unavoidable. We cannot change the mineral levels or water temperature coming into the house. A good number of leaks take place at or near a joint. In other words the place where the connection is. This can be a right-angle fitting or maybe a coupling. Any time water passes by the pipe joint there’s disturbance. Water swirls and turns as it goes through the joint. Preventing that is relatively inescapable. The disturbance can cause the water to erode the water pipe from the inside out.

Corrosion in Fittings
Any time a leak comes up in the fittings it might be a result of the installer failing to ream out the copper after cutting it. When a copper pipe is cut with a pipe cutter it gets pinched as it’s being cut. This creates a lip on the inside of the pipe. This lip can exaggerate the amount of turbulence that occurs at the joint. Often a pipe that has multiple holes generally occurs due to the installer not reaming out the pipe after cutting it.
